The incident occurred at around 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2 when City of Poughkeepsie 911 received two calls from people at the Ice House on the Hudson restaurant reporting that a woman had crawled out onto the ice in the Hudson River.
The woman crawled to the open channel in the middle of the river, where she then entered the water, said Det. Lt. Matt Clark of the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department.
It is not known why the woman crawled onto the ice, authorities said.
A passing tugboat towing a barge attempted to rescue the woman but was unsuccessful, Clark said.
A private citizen using a drone was able to spot the woman, who was under the ice at that point.
The Coast Guard responded with boats and helicopters and was able to retrieve the woman from under the ice. The Coast Guard transported her to a dock off Prospect Street where an ambulance was waiting.
The woman was transported to Vassar Brothers Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
The identity of the woman is being with held pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.
